Athens Epidaurus Festival 2024 Highlights

It’s a common myth that Greeks are spur-of-the-moment people; in reality, they plan their fun meticulously. And with the approach of spring in Athens, we’re gearing up for a festival season that stretches into the warm, late summer nights. For 70 years, the heart of summer has been dedicated to the Athens Epidaurus Festival and we are ready to fly you right there.

Recognised as the premier performing arts festival in Greece and one of the longest-standing in Europe, the festival’s vibrant 2024 programme kicks off on June 1 and runs through August 24. Spanning 85 days, the festival will showcase 93 productions across iconic Athens venues and the historic Theatre of Epidaurus. Over these months, upwards of 2,500 artists and performers from around the globe will tap into the unique essence of Athens city, bringing their talents to the festival’s varied stages. From the stunning Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the industrial Pireos 260, to the Athens Conservatoire, the National Library of Greece, the Hellenic Cosmos, and even unconventional sites like the Sotiria Hospital and the Keratsini Seafood Market.

Here’s a monthly guide to the not-to-be-missed and lesser-known gems of the festival. Big names like Sting, Anohni and the Johnsons, and Loreena McKennit will take the stage at the Herodion—though they hardly need an introduction. However, make sure not to miss the GRAPE section in July, spotlighting the finest in Greek creative performing arts. And of course, the timeless classics from Aeschylus, Aristophanes, and Euripides continue to captivate audiences in both traditional and contemporary interpretations. Get ready for a spectacular AEF2024!

June
The festival springs to life with its opening at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. The contemporary scene has thrived here over the past 20 years, particularly at Pireos 260. Nights here extend beyond the performances, culminating in ‘Live at the Platea,’ a series of post-show parties in the courtyard where artists and art lovers mingle to live music and DJ sets.

July
July sees the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus come alive with its first performances of the season, while Athens buzzes with major acts like Sting performing at the Odeon and the exciting GRAPE initiative taking full effect.

August
As the Athens leg wraps up at the end of July, the focus shifts to Epidaurus, where fans gather to celebrate the works of the great Greek tragedians.
